A Prayer for the Motherless
By Rev. Cindy Cox Garrard, Associate Pastor, St Luke United Methodist Church
To my dear friends who have lost their mothers,
especially those whose loss is in the last year:
Be tender to yourself this week.
You will be bombarded with sentimental advertisements to honor your mother;
Honor her by being kind to others.
You will find yourselves suddenly emotional as you pass a rack of cards or flowers
or, depending on your mother, a case of collards or loaf of bread.
That is a normal and even disconcertingly comforting response.
The chord of love is being plucked again,
and tears are normal.
Have a plan for how you will observe this Sunday,
be it worshipping with family or friends,
hiking the Pine Mountain Trail,
or working in the yard
(or all three!).
Make sure you nourish your spirit, your mind, and your body.
Shalom, friends.
