Women’s Health Care gains a powerful new advocate
If Oscars were awarded for thoughtful pieces written by people with the platform to make a difference, Angelina Jolie would be this year’s winner.
Her decision to have a preventive double mastectomy — then to reveal that private choice to the world — is a gutsy move. I admire her courage.
But I especially appreciate Ms. Jolie’s efforts to raise awareness about breast cancer and women’s health care. Yes, there is a test for the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, but not every insurance carrier will cover it.
The bad news is that many women in the United States are not in a financial position to afford gene testing and lifesaving preventative treatment. The good news is those same women just gained a powerful new advocate.
