Welcome to Camp Old Navy
Boys & Girls Clubs of the Chattahoochee Valley’s Teen Club members recently joined the staff at Old Navy in Columbus, Georgia, for “Camp Old Navy,” where they received hands- on job training and work force education. “Camp Old Navy” gives youth the chance to go behind the scenes and see what it takes to operate a business.
For the past five years, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Chattahoochee Valley has participated in the program to assist teenagers in workforce development. This year thirteen teens from the two teen centers participated in the event. They spent four hours with the store managers, assistant managers and floor staff in learning how to operate a cash register, customer service, inventory, store decorations (props) and more. The thirteen teens who attended also watched a new hire video and conducted mock job interviews. They also received a document featuring do’s and don’ts about job interviews.
“Camp Old Navy gives youth the chance to experience real world job training,” said manager Shenequia Adams. “We also give those of age the chance to apply for a position within our store.”
Camp Old Navy is part of a multi-year/multi-million dollar commitment sponsored by Gap Inc. Gap Inc. partnered with Boys & Girls Clubs of America and local Clubs across the country to create and implement a career-oriented initiative called CareerLaunch.
CareerLaunch provides a full range of career exploration and job skills experiences for teens, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances. CareerLaunch is designed to further encourage interaction between teens and concerned adults who serve as career coaches so young people can learn skills and potential career opportunities from real-life role models.
