The Civil War Naval Museum at Port Columbus is hosting Cool History: Civil War Surgery.
July 10-11, 2010
1 p.m., 2 p.m., & 3 p.m.
This year, the staff are presenting a unique theme for the event, CSI: Port Columbus, to show a Civil War-era criminal investigation.
In the wake of the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, the formidable might of the US Navy was focused on preventing the escape of Booth or any of his conspirators. As a long-time advocate of the Navy, Lincoln had many friends and overwhelming support among those in the Union sea service, who made it their personal mission to see those responsible for his death brought to justice.
Booth’s conspirators, when captured, were taken to US Ironclad Monitors, which became in essence ultra-high security prisons until they were transferred for trial. Booth himself, killed while attempting to avoid capture, was taken to the Union monitor class ironclad USS Montauk for autopsy.
Join us at Port Columbus for a recreation of this investigation, as our Civil War doctor examines the infamous assassin. As usual, the firing of the large naval cannon outside is always an added attraction for Cool History weekend.
Location: 1002 Victory Drive, Columbus
