Cool History: Medical Mysteries @ The National Civil War Naval Museum – Port Columbus
Our annual exploration of Civil War medicine and surgery at sea has covered various unique topics, from surgery demonstrations to a recreation of the autopsy of John Wilkes Booth (which was conducted on a U.S. Ironclad!).
Learn about Civil War surgery and medicine at sea, as our surgeon explains his techniques, tools and medicines, visitors will gain a unique perspective on combat medicine.
This year, our focus will be the USS Red Rover, the first hospital ship in the U.S. Navy – and one of the first places to see women serving aboard a U.S. ship.

Did you know? During combat, the ship’s surgeon would typically set up on the dining table in the officers’ wardroom, as it was usually the only large table on board the ship. After any needed surgery was completed, the table would simply be wiped off, and diner would be served!
