As a continuation of last fall’s Civil Rights Speaker Series, the Carson McCullers Center is pleased to promote the CSU Department of History and Geography’s on-going commemoration of the civil rights era. This spring, we will screen a series of free films with an opportunity for audience members to discuss their content. The films are part of Created Equal: America’s Civil Rights Struggle, a program made possible through a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, as part of its Bridging Cultures initiative, in partnership with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.
The Loving Story
Tuesday, April 22, at 7:00 pm
Columbus Public Library Auditorium, 3000 Macon Road
The 2011 Emmy-nominated documentary chronicles the struggles of a couple, arrested in 1958 for violating Virginia’s ban on interracial marriage, which led to a landmark Supreme Court decision allowing such unions.
After the initial screening, these films will be available for showings at schools and community/senior centers. CSU will also share related clip summaries, reading lists, and discussion ideas.
