About the Exhibition:
Painters are confined to the traditions and art historical reference they inherit and know that in order to keep painting alive and push it forward, they must find ways to connect it to our times. The artist’s hand has become a primary reference point for many artists intent on rethinking painting. Despite the periodic conversation of the death of painting, this genre of art making is alive and well. But it’s evolution have fostered skepticism about the role of gesture as an indicator of artistic genius or authenticity, a doubt that has found an outlet in a wide variety of paintings and artistic practices since the 1960s.
The artists in this exhibition sample the changes and appropriation of traditions, ideas, and techniques as a way to make us rethink the medium.
