The Columbus State University Wind Ensemble honors the CSU Director of Bands emeritus Col. Hal Gibson (RET.), as he celebrates his 90th birthday! The concert, entitled Cathedrals, begins regally with Strauss’s fanfare written for the Golden Hall, Vienna’s Musikverein, followed by one of Bach’s great organ works, the technically brilliant and beautiful Toccata, Adagio, and Fugue, composed for the Freiberg Cathedral organ in Germany. Birthday boy, Hal Gibson, closes the first half with one of Wagner’s most enduring works from the opera Tannhauser, Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral. The University Singers will join in the second half to sing Igor Stravinsky’s pious and very personal Mass. Guest composer John Mackey will introduce his epic work, The Frozen Cathedral, which will immerse the audience in icy and spine-tingling percussion sounds.
