Handmade Costume Ideas
By Sara Sophia
Halloween is such a wonderful holiday where it seems just about anything is possible. I’ve long suspected that the air of magic stirred up around the season serves to fuel my already immense love of baking and crafting. If you are testing out the waters of crafting yourself, what better way have fun with your creative side than by putting together a costume! Whether you are dressing your little one up as an obscure fairytale heroine, or trying your hand at a jaw-dropping family costume set, I hope the following ideas will get you in the Halloween crafting spirit. These are some of my favorite examples from online makers, bloggers and friends.
My friend Katie and her adorable family as Peter Pan and his Lost Boys:
Clark Kent at his finest:
This family knows where ALL the wild things are:
The best kid version of Edward Scissor Hands ever:
A whimsically perfect little red riding hood:
A clever astronaut:
Alice in Wonderland after a run in with the ‘eat me’ cookies:
Cutest bear family and Goldilocks ever! (full instructions here)
The sweetest little Frida Kahlo imaginable:
Lastly, I’ll share my brood a few years ago when they dressed up as Harry, Neville, Ron and Hermione from the Harry Potter book series. These costumes were equal parts handmade as well as store bought; we purchased white dress shirts, black pants, and Harry Potter brand ties from a costume store — then added few quickly knit scarves (thanks to Grandma!), black wool felt capes, twig wands and they were ready to go.
Here’s hoping you find the costume of your dreams, whether you choose to make it OR buy it. If you need more inspiration, please visit my ‘Disguises’ Pinterest board…….and may all your Halloween wishes come true.
Love,
