Editor’s Note: On October 4, 2013, we received the following email regarding a game called the Knockout Challenge from Valerie Fuller, Director of Communications at Muscogee County School District.
Parents, please talk to your children about the health and safety consequences of playing any type of fainting or choking games. Variations of this game have been around for years, but it is still serious and something to watch out for!
Dear Parents:
We have been alerted that some children, even students in our district, are participating in a dangerous game called the Knock out Challenge, which can cause injury or death. At least six students in our district reportedly took turns playing the game. A student took multiple quick breaths until he felt dizzy. Then, another child pressed their hands on the student’s chest for several seconds until the child passed out.
Dr. Joseph Zanga, Chief of Pediatrics of Columbus Regional Health says, “A student who does this risks his or her health and could die from the challenge or the fall.”
Please monitor your child’s conversations, internet and social media access on personal cell phones and computers as they often learn these dangerous practices on-line, from older siblings, or friends. Talk to your child about the serious danger and the real health and safety consequences. Report concerns to school administrators, the school counselor or your family doctor immediately. Encourage students to report any potential health or safety risk behavior to school administrators as the health and safety of every child is priority for all.
Thanks,
Valerie Fuller
