History First Program at National Civil War Naval Museum: Life Aboard the USS Hartford
Discover what the daily life of a sailor aboard the famous USS Hartford was like.

Living History Interpreters will be aboard our replica of the USS Hartford in the Berth Deck and Ward Room demonstrating daily life and medical treatment. Try your hand at playing a period instrument, learn about African American Medal of Honor winning crewman John Lawson, hear about the formidable CSS Tennessee’s fight against the Hartford, or try administering anesthetics 1860’s style!
At the Hands-On Activity Area in the Overlook Gallery children can give archaeology a try with our Jackson Recovery sand table, try model ship building, or draw and color their own sailing ship pictures.
Cannon firing: We’ll end the day at 4:00 p.m. with a bang with our 7 – Inch Brooke Rifle!
