If you are anywhere in the Middle Georgia area, stop by and visit Lane Southern Orchard in Fort Valley. My boys and I had the opportunity to explore the farm and visit the six-acre strawberry patch on a recent field trip.
This is a family operated farm with thousands of acres for growing peaches, pecans, blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, kiwi, apples, muscadines and scuppernongs — which are grapes for y’all non-Southerners.
The farm is open daily, year round. If you’ve never visited before, it’s best to make a morning or afternoon of it. Strawberries were currently in season, and I was on a mission to pick as many as my small cooler would hold.
Part of our field trip included Lane’s “Agriculture in the Classroom” class about strawberries and how they’re grown — an excellent class for kids!
I was impressed with our instructor. She was both engaging and entertaining — clearly was a former school teacher! During the class we got to pick a pound of strawberries and indulge in a fresh cup of ice cream. It was an unusually warm day for April, so my boys weren’t enthusiastic about picking strawberries. They were, however, eager to sample the ice cream.
After the class we ate lunch at the Peachtree Café and Bakery inside the Roadside Market. Menu items include southern favorites from smoked pulled pork and catfish to peach cobbler and pecan pies. You can sample homemade favorites like peach cobbler, peach ice cream, and enjoy other goodies like fudge and sweet treats. They also have a fully stocked salad bar and kids menu.
The Roadside Market offers fresh seasonal produce, gourmet treats, local wines and a gift shop with authentic souvenirs. Naturally, my boys were infatuated with the wooden toy guns.
After lunch, I grabbed a rocking chair for a relaxing break while my boys and their classmates worked off their excess energy on the playground. All in all, it was a fun day on the farm.
Starting in mid-May, Lane Southern Orchards will be full of peaches. You can watch from the catwalk above the work floor as the employees separate out the best ones. In June and July they offer tours of the pecan and peach orchards. In October you can explore a their six-acre corn maze and pumpkin patch.
