When my boys were little, we would read aloud the timeless story Harold and the Purple Crayon. Armed only with an oversized purple crayon, young Harold draws himself a landscape full of wonder and excitement. Harold and his trusty crayon travel through woods and across seas and past dragons before returning to bed, safe and sound.
One family vacation, my husband and I made the mistake of taking naps at the same time. He thought I was watching the boys. I thought he was watching the boys. For about an hour, nobody was watching the boys. We woke up to discover that our creative toddler had scribbled all over the cabin walls with a green crayon! No door, table, window, appliance, banister, or wall had been spared. It took an entire afternoon to clean the cabin. Thank goodness for Mr. Clean Magic Erasers, or we would have lost our security deposit!
When I think of that afternoon, I am reminded of this quote: Silence is golden… Unless you have kids, then silence is just suspicious.
