Planning Your Kids’ Summer Schedule
By Charlotte Bowman
Sports, camps, swimming lessons, family vacations… when you’re planning activities for kids to do this summer, there are many things to consider. Here are some tips to help you find the right balance of activities and free time for your family:
1) Limit the number of activities – Sign your kids up for summer camps, but don’t over schedule! Setting a limit on the number of activities will keep life less stressful for your and your children. Instead, plan activities that you can do together as a family.
2) Schedule free days – Leave time for laziness. Give yourselves days where you have nowhere to be. The balance of free days with scheduled days will help you appreciate the summer months and give everyone a chance to relax.
3) Keep educational activities on hand – Keep those academic skills sharp by setting aside time each day for “learning” fun. Encourage your children to read for 30 minutes a day. Have them start writing in a journal or diary. Help them brush up on math and vocabulary skills with flashcards. Whatever you decide, keep their minds active.
4) LIMIT the amount of daily media time – Too much media time (video games, computer time, talking on the phone, texting, and watching TV and movies) can turn your kids into couch potatoes. Unplug your kids by setting a limit on the amount of media time they spend each day and stick to it.
