This year marks the beginning of the national commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War, a dramatic milestone in our nation’s history that continues to have impact on our society today. In honor of the occasion, the Chattahoochee Valley Civil War Sesquicentennial Planning Committee, a collaborative group of dozens of area cultural institutions, invites you to be a part of a special evening exploring the impact of the war on our area.
A panel of speakers including favorite local historian Billy Winn; noted scholar Dr. David Williams, author of Rich Man’s War: Class, Caste, and Confederate Defeat in the Lower Chattahoochee Valley; and representatives from area museums and historic sites will discuss what life was like here during the war and this area’s involvement in events of national importance.
The audience will also get a sneak peek at plans for a new bi-state interpretive park being planned on the banks of the Chattahoochee in both Columbus and Phenix City which will focus on the Battle of Columbus fought on April 16, 1865.
