Drugmaker Abbott Laboratories says it is recalling a line of infant formula which may be contaminated with insect parts.
The voluntary action affects Similac-brand powder formulas in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Guam and some Caribbean countries. The company says the products may contain a small beetle or larvae, which could cause stomach ache and digestion problems.
If these symptoms persist for more than a few days, a physician should be consulted.
The affected products were sold in plastic containers and various can sizes, including 8-ounce, 12.4 ounce and 12.9 ounce.
The company has setup a Web site and consumer hot line at (800) 986-8850 or check out http://similac.com/recall/lookup.aspx.
The products should be returned to the company at no cost.
Information on how to return the product also can be found on the company website or on the consumer hotline, (800) 986-8850, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
No Abbott liquid infant formulas are impacted.
Products not involved in the recall include all Abbott Nutrition liquid ready-to-feed and concentrated infant formulas and all powder and liquid specialty formulas, such as Similac Expert Care™ Alimentum®, Elecare®, Similac Expert Care™ Neosure®, Similac® Human Milk Fortifier, and metabolic formulas for inherited disorders.
