Homework is important, but helping children with homework isn’t always easy. Here is a list of homework tips from teachers to help you make life easier for everyone.
- Every student should have a planner they use daily in each class. Teach your child how to use this tool as an effective way to organize homework.
- Have a folder that is just for homework assignments. Taking too many books or folders home may cause disorganization and clutter.
- Schedule homework for a set time each day.
- Have a set place where homework is to be completed. Create an atmosphere that is appropriate for learning.
- Organize each class’s assignments into separate folders or sections in a sturdy binder. Frequently check these folders for good organization. You may even offer a reward.
- Keep distractions to a minimum. No cell phones or TV. If music helps, make sure it is kept at a low volume.
- Make sure kids do their own work. It is okay to help, but homework is a tool to see if the student understands the concept being taught, so avoid telling the answers to get a good grade.
- Use different study strategies such as making flashcards, highlighting key terms, audio recording …etc.
- Don’t procrastinate….don’t wait till it is time to go to bed to do homework…set a time when you are alert and focused to do homework.
- Don’t be afraid to ask….check with your child’s teacher or school website for additional information about homework.
