Warhol in Southern Collections at the Columbus Museum
When you hear the name Andy Warhol, giant Campbell’s Soup cans and larger-than-life Marilyn Monroe screen prints may come to mind. Never had the chance to see a real Warhol piece in person? Now through October 13, the Columbus Museum is home to the Warhol in Southern Collections exhibition. Experience over 100 Warhol works from the 1960s-80s generously loaned to the museum from private collections and art museums from across the South.
When you arrive at the museum’s 3rd floor you may gravitate toward the four oversize Campbell’s Soup prints that anchor the main exhibit hall or you can hang a right toward the five life-size resin and acrylic Andy Warhol statues created by contemporary artist Jack Dowd. Look closely and see if you notice anything different between the statues in front of you and those pictured on the cover of your Family Guide (available upon entering the museum). Hint: I noticed that Dowd added a finishing touch to each statue after they were installed.
Beyond those resin and acrylic Warhols, you’ll find The Factory.
STACK ME – DRAW ME – BUILD ME
Warhol’s original studio in Midtown Manhattan, NY was known as “The Factory” and the Columbus Museum has set aside its very own Factory area for adults, families, and children to enjoy some hands on creativity. Visitors can explore artistic choices of their own as they move, stack, and draw the large Brillo Pad boxes or Campbell’s Soup cans. Grab a seat on the couch and skim the variety of illustrated coffee table books about Warhol or watch the looping video about his life and art.
Explore the wall with the George Washington screen prints, lifting each screen to discover the process Warhol would use to create the famous Marilyn, Liz, and Mick Jagger screen prints still see replicated today.
At the far end of the museum’s Factory, you’ll find the Rubbing Station where you can create your own “Warholized” version of George Washington and Oscar the Alligator. Take your creation with you or sign it and hang it for others to enjoy!
