Wrapping Up the School Year
The last day of school is just days away, and the daily life and structure of school will be over for the summer. No doubt your kids are feeling excited–like mine, or they may be feeling some sadness about leaving behind great teachers, experiences, and friends. Here are some ideas on how you and your child can celebrate the milestone and wrap up the school year.
Countdown Calendar
Make a big calendar to hang on the wall for the last month of school. Decorate it with stickers and any craft supplies you have on hand. Then every afternoon after school, have your child cross off the date.
Keep in touch
Help your child keep in touch with classmates. Ask her which friends she’d like to continue seeing over the summer and gather contact information for them. Before the last day of school rolls around, arrange some summer playdates.
Write thank you notes
If your child is attached to her teacher, have her write an “end-of-year thank-you letter or card. Teachers love to receive thank you notes from their students.
Make a summer learning packet
Ask your child’s teacher for a list of books to read over the summer. Then register for your local library’s summer reading program. Buy your child a composition notebook and have them decorate the cover. Then encourage her to write in her journal each day to keep a log of her summer vacation. Can’t think of what to write? Celebrate the milestone
Take your child on a fun day trip to celebrate the end of school. Treat your daughter and her best friend to high tea. Make a souvenir at a paint-your-own pottery place, or spend a day at a nearby amusement park.
